Illinois · Who is missing mammograms

Who makes up Illinois’s overdue population?

We look inside the estimated population of women reporting no mammogram in the past two years—by education, household income, race and ethnicity, and urban–rural residence.

Derived from 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) population data and 2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey estimates. “Overdue” is shorthand for the measured two-year interval.

≈670,000 Illinois women ages 40–74 estimated to report no mammogram in the past two years
Composition

Who are they?

Percentages are shares of the overdue population—not screening rates within each demographic group. 95% confidence intervals account for the BRFSS complex survey design.

01

Education

Share of all overdue Illinois women

Did not graduate high school 14.1%≈95,000
95% CI 10.8–17.5%
High school graduate 25.6%≈172,000
95% CI 21.8–29.4%
Attended college / technical school 30.6%≈205,000
95% CI 26.6–34.6%
Graduated college / technical school 28.9%≈194,000
95% CI 25.5–32.4%
0.7% have missing education data, not shown. Estimated counts are rounded and inherit uncertainty from both the BRFSS share and the overall ≈670,000 anchor.
02

Household income

Collapsed categories for a more stable display

Under $25,000 16.8%≈112,000
95% CI 13.8–19.7%
$25,000–<$50,000 28.1%≈188,000
95% CI 24.3–32.0%
$50,000–<$100,000 24.4%≈163,000
95% CI 20.7–28.1%
$100,000+ 22.9%≈153,000
95% CI 19.3–26.5%
7.8% have missing/refused income data, not shown. BRFSS measures household income, not a poverty ratio.
03

Race / ethnicity

Share of all overdue Illinois women

White, non-Hispanic 60.4%≈405,000
95% CI 56.3–64.6%
Black, non-Hispanic 10.7%≈72,000
95% CI 8.0–13.5%
Other / multiracial, non-Hispanic wider CI 7.7%≈52,000
95% CI 5.1–10.3%
Hispanic 19.6%≈131,000
95% CI 16.3–22.8%
1.5% are missing/refused, not shown. The combined Other/Multiracial estimate has a wider confidence interval and should not be read as equally precise.
04

Urban / rural

BRFSS county classification

Urban county 94.2%≈631,000
95% CI 92.4–96.0%
Rural county wider CI 5.8%≈39,000
95% CI 4.0–7.6%
The rural estimate has a wider confidence interval. This is a county-level urban/rural classification, not distance to a mammography facility.

How the counts are constructed

Each full-precision BRFSS weighted subgroup share is multiplied by the same unrounded statewide estimate used in Part 1 (displayed as ≈670,000). We round only the final counts for display. These are derived estimates, not direct Census subgroup counts.

Methodology & limitations
  • BRFSS subgroup percentages use _LLCPWT, _STSTR, and _PSU. Confidence intervals use Taylor linearization for the composition ratio among Illinois respondents reporting no mammogram in the past two years.
  • The breakdowns use the same 817 Illinois respondents with CDC’s _MAM402Y = 2 as Part 1, including CDC-imputed ages. Missing demographic answers remain in the denominator and are reported beneath each chart.
  • The statewide headcount is calculated as 2,693,415 Census ACS women × the full-precision BRFSS share (24.8720232…%). Subgroup counts use that unrounded result, 669,906.8…, and full-precision subgroup shares before rounding for display.
  • These charts describe the composition of the overdue population. They do not estimate the probability of being overdue within each education, income, race/ethnicity, or urban/rural group.
  • Demographic association should not be interpreted as a reason an individual mammogram did not happen.
